Theme day: Slow

The theme for December is "Slow".  What goes slower than a turtle.  

 

Leaf fall

Even the heron has to wade through leaves.

 

Murder

A group of crows is a murder of crows, but if there are only a few does that make it mayhem instead?

 

Phoebe

A phoebe in the weeds.

 

Balance

Mr. Heron decided to hang out in the trees for a while.

 

Deer

This young deer watched us warily from the lakeside.

 

Kingfisher

He was making a lot of noise, chattering in the trees.

 

Spread

A cormorant dries out in the morning sun.

 

Heron again

A lucky heron shot.

 

Birds of a feather?

The Egret doesn't seem to mind the gaggle of geese that surround him.

 

Sparrow

Sparrows just look like little brown birds when the flit around.  But if you look closely you see that they are different and interesting.  This one is a chipping sparrow.

 

Downy

A downy woodpecker at the feeder.

The little phoebe was bug hunting in the tall grass.

The lone egret at Shelly Lake needs a friend.

What's the story?

This old farm machine sits in the pollinator garden at Durant Park.  Where did it come from?  And why is it here?

 

Mockingbird

This mockingbird was hiding out in the brush.

 

Fishing buddies

Another unlikely pair.  The heron and the cormorant were both fishing on a very small lake.

 

Two Greats

The Great Egret and the Great Blue Heron share a sandbank.

Nuthatch

A typical nuthatch pose.  Do they have an aching neck at the end of the day?

What can I say?  Another heron.

 

Out of luck

This little kingfisher was getting pretty frazzled.  He kept diving down, flying around and diving again and again, coming back with nothing.  After a while he chattered as he flew off to a better fishing spot.
