Morning at the lake.

 

Peaceful?

It looked like a peaceful lake until the boaters came by...

 

Idaho winter

On a visit to Northern Idaho. 

 The lake was moody after a quiet snow.

A dramatic sky on a late afternoon.

 

Heron (again)

According to a group of high school students walking by, they've named this heron Herold.  Makes sense doesn't it?

 

Cormorant

Usually when we see cormorants, they're in a group in one of the other of Raleigh's lakes.  This bird seemed very happy to be the solitary owner of Durant park lake.

I liked the different textures in this scene.

Falls lake from Forest Ridge park.

 

Wind patterns

The wind on the lake made interesting patterns.

The cormorants were enjoying the view from their customary stumps.

 

Foggy lake

After days of rain, the fog set in.

 

So where's the sea?

Does this sea gull know he's 130 miles from the ocean?  

 

Winter lake

No snow yet, but the winter gloom is here.

 

Old turtles

These big old turtles were basking in the sun.  

A red eared slider.  

These turtles are not native, but are becoming ubiquitous because people release their pets into the lakes.

Two lakes, two birds

Durant Nature Park has two lakes.  One large one small.

On this day, there was a heron fishing in the bigger lake.

And another, resting on a log in the smaller lake.

 

Busy lake

On one of the last warm days of summer, it seemed like everyone was out on the lake, busily boating,

and quietly fishing.

 

Theme day: City People

This month's theme is "City People".  

There's not much going on in the city right now, but there is a lot of dog walking.

Peaceful Pond

What's the difference between a pond and a lake?   This one is small but supports a lot of wildlife.
