Trash

Old tires...

Chicken bucket....

Trashcan lid...

Broken plastic jug...

And the ubiquitous pop top.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We made these little turkeys yesterday in the refugee ESL class I teach.  The tails are outlines of their hands, and they  wrote things they are thankful for on the tail feathers.  Home, Family, Safety, God, Church, School, Teacher.
If only all refugees could have these simple things.

Retail

The stores are getting busier and busier.  And it's not even "Black Friday."

North Carolina Craft Beer

Here in North Carolina, our college sports teams are king.  On game days there is a noticeable effect.  When North Carolina State plays University of North Carolina, the city slows down.
So of course there would be a craft beer named for Old Tuffy the NC State mascot.

And one more turtle

They are so photogenic.  And the best part, they sit still for their portrait.

The instructor was demonstrating a particularly difficult position to the students.

Hermit Thrush

This guy sat around for a long time as I took many shots to get one good one.  I'm sure he thought he was well camouflaged, and he was right.

Mushroom

This little guy made me think about the dancing mushrooms in Fantasia.  My husband was thinking Mario Brothers...

Pokeweed

Google told me that this is a poisonous plant, and then proceeded to list the nutritional values:
Protein: 2.3g /100g
Calories: 20.08/100g
Calcium: 53 mg/100g
I'm not sure that I'd worry too much about nutrition on my way to the hospital...

Veterans Day

Fort Macon protected Beaufort Harbor from Pirates, Yankees, Confederates and German U-Boats.  The cannons are still pointed out into the inlet channel.  See more here.

Fall Flower

This little flower looks like a cross between an aster and a clover to me.  Any guesses?

Trash Photography

I read about a challenge in an article about street photography.  The challenge? To photograph trash.  It is supposed to get the new photographer to take street pictures without annoying people and getting in conflicts.

Since I'm on trails as often as I'm on streets, I thought I'd give Trail Trash Photography a whirl.  When you look for trash, you see it everywhere!

The interesting part of the exercise was to try to include the trash instead of looking for angles to exclude it.

Sweet fall

Without a hard freeze here, the trees take their time changing.  The sweetgums are one of the first to change, and one of the most colorful.

Resurrection

A month ago, the resurrection ferns looked like they were dead.  We have gotten some rain since, and here they are!

Here it was before the rain.

Water stairs

It looks like the steps up to Johnson Hall are flooded, but it's a fountain in front of the building.  The steps go around on either side.  It's very impressive, especially lit up at night.

Theme day: Brown

This month's theme is Brown.  I took this back in February, and was struck by how many different shades of brown there are.
