Theme Day: Picture of the year

Going through all the pictures I posted this year, this one was not the brightest or most colorful.  But I liked the mystery.

 

Theme day: Slow

The theme for December is "Slow".  What goes slower than a turtle.  

 

Theme day: Bridge

Bridges come in all sizes.  This one keeps your feet dry over a small trickle.

This one spans a creek.

 

Theme day: Fruit

The theme for August is Fruit.  

What could be more fruitful than a trip to the Farmer's Market? 

 

Theme day: Flea Market

The theme for July is Flea Market.

 The owner of the booth is from Kenya.  She designs the clothes and then her sister in Kenya makes them and sends them to her.  It was a popular booth.

 

Theme Day: Outdoor Cafe

The theme for June is Outdoor Cafes.  

There are several restaurants with outdoor seating in Raleigh, but what's better than ice cream?

 

Theme day-Mirrors

The Theme for March is Mirror reflection.

The Mirror Labyrinth at the NC Museum of Art is a great place to play with reflections.

 

Theme day: Picture of the year

The theme for January is Picture of the year 2023.  

This isn't my best picture, but it's one of the best experiences of 2023.  The eagle swooped down, scared all the little killdeers, and then flew up to a tall tree and surveyed the lake.

 

Theme Day: Local History

Oberlin Rising.

The installation is new, but it is a monument to the history of Oberlin Village, one of a small number of freedmen's villages near Raleigh

(See here for a timeline. )  Today Oberlin village is close to the heart of Raleigh itself and is in transision as gentrification takes over.

The community is still strong and holding on to their history.

 

Theme day: Transportation

The theme for October is Transportation.  An ebike with a little bit of pedaling power will get you pretty far.

But maybe not too fast.

 

Theme day: Bottle

Hidden in the overgrowth in front of an old house, I found a bottle tree. It's a southern tradition, possibly brought from Africa by enslaved Africans.  Blue bottles are hung outside to trap evil spirits.  (see here for the history )

 

In the Garden

The theme for August is "Garden."  

The eggplant is still blooming.  

The tomatoes are setting on.   It's a race to get them before the squirrels do.

The dill is going to seed.

The cucumbers are keeping the bees happy, and the bees are returning the favor.

 

Theme day- Climate

The theme day for July is Climate.

In the heat of the summer, the best place to be is the pool.  

As the climate heats up, we're going to need a lot more swimming pools, this one is pretty crowded.

 

Theme day: Comfort food

 

I promised myself I would never post pictures of food.  But the Theme for March is comfort food.  So here it is.  Homemade sourdough bread cooling on the rack.

Theme day: Virtue

The theme for February 1 is "Virtue."   I've always heard that hard work is a virtue.  This pileated woodpecker has certainly been hard at work on this tree.

Happy New Year!

This month's theme is "picture of the year."

I don't know if it's my best picture of 2022, but I really like the blue sky and blue bird together.  (also, I finally got the bird in sharp focus for once!)

 

Theme day: Soft

The theme for this month is "Soft".  So here are the soft pedals of a pansy.

 

Theme day: rest

 

The theme for this month is "rest".  What is more restful than a dog sleeping in the sun?  What is she dreaming about?

Theme Day: Wood

The theme for August is "wood".  So here you have wooden shingles,

And the gnarly trunk of an Osage orange tree.

 

Theme day: Transparent

 

Theme day for July is "Transparent".  It gives me an excuse to post yet another picture of a dragonfly.  Hard to find anything more transparent than this.
