Some could be mistaken for birds.

The dragonflies are zooming around the lake already.  

Summer is here!

 

Line up

The dragonflies were busy on a hot summer afternoon at the lake.  These two were sharing a blade of grass.

The butterfly yesterday had lost it's tail.  The dragonfly today has a chewed wing.  This time in the summer, everything is slightly battered.

In the summer heat, it's dragonfly season again.

We found sparkplug dragonflies at the roadside shop.

And then the real deal.

 

Theme day: Transparent

 

Theme day for July is "Transparent".  It gives me an excuse to post yet another picture of a dragonfly.  Hard to find anything more transparent than this.

The dragonflies are zooming around the lakeshore.

And even a few damselflies.

This dragonfly sat waiting to take off like a helicopter on a landing pad.  She's an Eastern Pondhawk (see here).

Standing in one place by the pond, we saw dragonflies everywhere.

This little guy is an Eastern Amberwing.  That's a pretty descriptive name.  Kind of like calling your dog Spot.

 

Two for one

These are two different types of dragonflies, but they were zooming around together and both landed on the same stick.  They must be friends.

 

First dragonfly

There were dozens of these little Slaty Skimmers flying around near the pond.  They must have just hatched out together.

 

Dragonfly and turtle

These little orange dragonflies are flying everywhere.  It's very hard to get a picture since it seems like they never settle down.  But here this one decided to rest on a turtle's back.

And this one was sitting in my picture of a feather.

It's dragonfly season again!  They're flying around all the bodies of water.

This dragonfly sat long enough for a picture.  I think he was posing for me.

Busy wetland

The mushy, marshy wetlands on the edge of Lake Lynn was buzzing with life.  A Blue Skimmer sat on a twig. 

This Eastern Amberwing didn't sit for long.

This Common Whitetail skimmer cast a shadow in the murky water.

This Stream Bluet took a ride on a turtle.
