I've never been able to capture the exact color of the berries on the American Beautyberry bush. They almost glow with purple.

Supposedly the Poke weed plant is poisonous, with the berries being especially toxic. The forest service website then says they're an important food source for birds. How does that work?

The birds are an evolutionary exception. I would imagine the seed of the plant gets passed along in the bird excrement, allowing the plant to spread that way.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo of the beauty berries!! As for poke salad, my grannies and aunties had many instructions about how to eat it...a very complicated business as I recall. Boiling, draining, boiling again seem to come to mind.
ReplyDeleteI guess after all that you would end up with roughage, or what they call fiber these days!
