Vole

This "cute"  little rodent was busy digging up the lawn.  He's some sort of  vole.  (see here)

Memorial Day

The view from the House of Memory in Oakwood's Confederate Cemetery.

This cemetery was started in 1869 to inter North Carolina's Confederate dead.

Youth is not pretty

I'm not sure what this guy is going to grow up to be, maybe a brown headed cowbird?  But right now this young bird is not too pretty.

Heron in the Pines

The herons were making a horrible racket up in the trees.  They must have been fussing about their nests.

View point

There were quite a few people out enjoying Shelly Lake.  But there was still room for quiet contemplation.

Eagle eyes

This large bird is a young bald eagle.  They were hatched this spring, and now sit outside the nest getting ready to fly.  Mama eagle is never too far away.

Little Mama

This little song sparrow was feeding her big cowbird baby.  Sadly, cowbirds are parasitic and lay their eggs in other birds' nests.  This large cowbird probably pushed the smaller sparrow babies out of the nest and left poor mama sparrow one large baby to feed.

Audrey III

This one looks like the plant in "Little Shop of Horrors".  The leaves are enormous, and then this huge flower appeared.
It's called Datura, and it's poisonous.  It's sometimes called "Devil's Trumpet".

Old Faithful

This old school tricycle has been handed down through generations.  The tires are worn flat and it leans to one side.  But it's still a kid's best friend.

Passion

Passion flowers are actually native to North Carolina.  This one though is in someone's garden.

Garden

I've been looking at neighborhood gardens.  This one has a veggie garden in the front yard.

Why it not working?

Our granddaughters stopped to make a wish at our newly working fountain.  The next day the 3 year-old angrily asked: "Why it not working?"  We explained how the water is pumped up from the bottom and comes out the spout and see, it's working.  She repeated:  "It not working.  Where the unicorn?"  I finally agreed that maybe the unicorn flew away.  She came up close and whispered something to the fountain.  Who knows what she's going to expect to appear tomorrow.

Mama Robin

Now I see why Daddy Robin was so distressed when I was in the garden.  Mama's sitting on her nest right above the tomatoes.

Angry birds

A pair of robins have built a nest in my garden.  This one cheeps angrily at me when I go out into the garden. I hope they'll be done before the tomatoes are ripe.

He's not a happy guy!

Patronus?

This garden sculpture looks like the patronus from Harry Potter to me.  It's a little bit creepy.

Wisteria

Wisteria grows like an invasive weed here.  It twines around old buildings and covers small trees.  But in the garden it's beautiful.

Theme day: Shopping

The theme this month is Shopping.
There weren't any shoppers on this cold morning, but Laffayette Village is a unique shopping area.  It's made to look like a French village, including a small Eiffel tower on the corner.
