Flamingos

One neighbor found a way to celebrate her fiftieth birthday.  Her yard sprouted with fifty flamingos and hearts.

Somebody's playground

This is a forested area very close to a development.  This must be the place to play for the neighborhood kids.

Spooky old tree

When its leaves return it won't look quite so evil...

A murder of Crows

We could hear them a long way off, croaking at each other.  They would gather in the trees, then all fly off at the same time, circle and come back to the tree to gather again.  All the time making loud croaks.

Carolina wren

Carolina Wrens are very curious.  We've even had them come into the house when a door is left open.  This one was just enjoying the sun.

After the Rain

After 2.5 inches of rain in 24 hours, there was water in places that are almost always dry,
A temporary swamp.

Black Duck

A new kind of duck showed up in the neighborhood pond.  Turns out they are American Black Ducks (see here).   According to my bird app they are rare in this area for this time of year.

Snooping

The art wolf at the Sertoma Art Center was peeking in.  I don't know if the woman checking her phone noticed that she was being watched.

Big Chill

Just when it looked like spring was really here, we got a hard freeze.  The poor tulip magnolia trees couldn't hold on.

Teepee

It must have taken a while to find the right branches for this teepee.

Into the wind

It was breezy on the lake, and the sea gulls lined up into the wind.

Pareidolia again

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon where people tend to see things, especially faces in random patterns.
I see a big mean mouth, what do you see?

Tulip Magnolia

The tulip magnolias only bloom for a short time, but they're so welcome in the spring.

Spring!

I apologize to all of my Northern friends.  I know you have a few months to go...
The spring bulbs are starting to come out.
Daffodils.

Hyacinths!

Mrs. Kingfisher

She was perched over the lake watching for fish and making her laughing call.  She swooped down, grabbed a fish and went back to laughing and hanging out in the tree.
How did I know she was a she?  The brown on her chest makes her a female. (see here)

Woof

I know that mail deliverers don't like dogs, but maybe this one is OK?

Herons

There were two herons around the pond.  One fishing along the bank, the other in a tree.

Who is this?

I think, but I'm not sure that this is a male Gadwall.  (see here)
The black bill, light body and black tail are unusual.

Grebe

We spotted two little ducks all by themselves in a quiet lake.  Looking closer, we decided they were Pied billed grebes.  (see here)
