If you stand in just the right place, a hoop of the Gyre surrounds a statue from Counterculture in the NC Museum of Art's sculpture park.

 

Musical swings

We found a new exhibit at the NC Museum of Art's sculpture park.  These swings play musical tones, harp, piano,  guitar and vibraphone. The faster you move, the higher the tone. When you get all of them swinging, they harmonize in unique ways.

The benches rotate back and forth and play tones as well.  The harmonies are very soothing.

Squirrel???

Kind of a creepy little squirrel to find in the forest.

Not just plants at the arboretum.

 

Counterculture

A new exhibit has shown up at the NC Museum of Art.

It's called Counterculture by Rose B. Simpson.   (see here for information about the artist and the work)

The figures stand looking out at land once belonging to Native tribes.

Each one has eyes that seem to glow with light coming through.

 

Conduit

A quiet place to sit, or a claustrophobic's nightmare.  A sculpture at the Raleigh Iron Works.

 

Art wolf

Every time I walk past the art center I look for the art wolf.  He stands outside the window looking in.  I wonder what he sees in there.

The Gyre is the most photographed installation in the NC Museum of Art's sculpture park.  How many people have taken the same picture?  (me too!)

 

A little bit creepy

She and another creepy friend stand at the entrance to a Mexican restaurant.  Do they attract or scare off potential customers?

 

Snoopy

"Snoopy"  is one of the last remaining sculptures by a plasterer named George Morris.  After retirment he began creating large fanciful sculptures that he set around on his farm.  After his death, the farm was sold and Preservation NC moved the pink dog to a place on Oberlin road.

Madonna

I went on an art walk in North Hills shopping district.  First up was this sculpture., called Madonna and Child. (see here)  

I've driven by it several times and I thought it was just a fancy lightpost.  

 

Little reader

This little bronze statue was reading outside the Raleigh Little Theater.

 

Theme day: Smile!

The Theme Day for June is "Smile."  This guy wasn't quite smiling, but his mouth is big enough.

 

Untitled

It looks like a rock, but it's a sculpture by Ledelle Moe, a South African artist.  His work takes on human forms in interesting ways.

 

Which is the sculpture?

The object in the foreground is a sculpture called "No Fuss."  In the background is an enormous crane in a nearby construction site.  The large cranes are popping up everywhere in Raleigh.  

 

Theme day: Museum

The theme for May is "Museum."

The new logo for the North Carolina Museum of Art is on every mug, notebook, pencil and knickknack that the museum store sells.  It's a graphic image of the Gyre. 

It's the most iconic work in the sculpture park.

 

Rainbow Head

This "rainbow head"  sits at one entrance to Nash square, one of the downtown parks.   It took me a bit to see that it wasn't just a wiggly rainbow, it really is a face looking to the sky.
