A downy woodpecker at the feeder.

This little downy woodpecker was clinging to the metal pole holding up a bird feeder.  He'd get quite a headache drumming on it.

Busy

This little downy woodpecker was working very hard on the tree.  

 

Visitor

A downy woodpecker has been visiting the feeder often.

We heard a tap tap tap in one of the trees

and found his home.

 

Face off

A downey woodpecker and a Carolina wren faced off at the suet feeder.  I'm not sure I'd mess with a fiesty little Carolina wren with it's long pointy beak.

 

Patience

This little female downey woodpecker patiently waited her turn at the feeder.  Her little claws gripped the metal pole.

 

Her mate took his time at the feeder.

Mr. and Mrs. Downy

 Mrs. Downy Woodpecker waited patiently for her husband to finish munching at the suet feeder

Mr. and Mrs.

There were two downy woodpeckers at the feeders.  Mr. Woodpecker has a red patch on his head.

Mrs. Woodpecker is strictly black and white.

This little downy woodpecker was darting everywhere.

I think he was chasing bugs.

A young downy woodpecker came to the feeder with his dad.  Dad showed him where the feeder was, and then flew off.  But the young guy ate for a long time.

This little woodpecker was well camouflaged against the trees.

The young downy woodpecker was being fed by Daddy.

This little downy woodpecker took his time and just hung out at the feeder.

Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers have been visiting the suet feeder.  

Red bellied woodpecker.  (I've never been able to see the red belly)

Downy woodpecker. (I guess because he's smaller than a hairy woodpecker)

This red belly is waiting his turn.

This little downy woodpecker decided to try a metal pole instead of a wooden tree.  

He found the suet feeder at last. 

Birds again

The bird feeders were very busy the day we were at Wilkerson Nature Preserve.  A Downy woodpecker and Pine Warbler shared the suet feeder

A White breasted nuthatch was next.

A Goldfinch parked on a perch for a long time.

A female gold finch and a house finch joined him.

Birds, birds, birds

The feeders at Wilkerson Nature Preserve were full of visitors.  The Pine Warbler liked the suet feeder.  So did the Blue Bird.

The Downy Woodpecker stayed with the seed feeder.

And the Cardinals picked up seeds from the ground.
