Teenager

Someday he'll be a bright red crested cardinal.  But he's a gawky teen right now.

Cardinal

This Cardinal was calling out to someone.  A mate?  An intruder into his territory?

Abandoned

Momma cardinal started her family in a vine arbor.  She must have decided that it wasn't the right place and left her nest and eggs.  We haven't seen her for a while.

What is that?

This cardinal looked like he couldn't believe what's falling from the sky.

Angry Birds?

Well, maybe not angry, maybe only grumpy.
The weather changed overnight from 70 degrees to snowing.  The birds just hunkered down in the trees.

Merry Christmas

Nature's Christmas decorations can be better than anything we can light up, string up or set up.

Merry Christmas!

Mama

First there was one egg in the nest, then three.  Now Mama cardinal will not leave her nest.  The nest is right next to the driveway, and she watches us cautiously whenever we're near.

Lunch time

Even though these young cardinals look big enough to feed themselves, Daddy Cardinal was still at work.

Who owns this feeder?

This cardinal camped out on the feeder.  The little birds gave him a wide berth.

Theme day: White

The theme for this month on City Daily Photo is "White".  The photographers from around the world are challenged to post a picture representing white.  See here for the entries.
This is my entry, not exactly white but it seemed like a white world (last December), except for a visiting red bird.

Red bird

There are a lot of stories about what a sighting of a cardinal means.  A messenger from the spirit world? A visit from a deceased loved one?  A nearby angel?
Well I just think they're beautiful birds.

Cardinal and his wife

One more picture of birds in the snow.  The male cardinal is flashier, but I think Mrs. Cardinal is beautiful too.

snow birds

Our feeder was a busy place during the latest snowstorm.
Cardinals and a Towhee,

Juncos

and even a Mourning Dove watching the show.
