Oberlin Rising.
The installation is new, but it is a monument to the history of Oberlin Village, one of a small number of freedmen's villages near Raleigh
(See here for a timeline. ) Today Oberlin village is close to the heart of Raleigh itself and is in transision as gentrification takes over.
That's interesting. I couldn't find out on a very brief search where the name came from. Oberlin College was the first college to admit black students in 1835, but that's in Ohio........
ReplyDeleteThe man who started Oberlin village graduated from Oberlin college. He named it after his Alma mater. So there is a connection
