Christmas fern


It's called a Christmas Fern because they stay green until Christmas. Do they wilt the day after Christmas?

Wild fern garden




Hidden away, on the far side of Durant lake, is the Fern garden.  Standing in one place, we found at least 4 different types.


Netted chain fern


Christmas fern


Royal fern


Who knows?

Resurrection fern


The resurrection ferns have done very well in the wet weather.  They're Epiphytes meaning they get their nutrients and water from the air.  (see here) These particular ones are growing on solid rock, so they really depend on the air.

Garden on a log


All of our rainfall means that ferns and moss grow easily on nearly anything.  Even fallen logs.

Prehistoric fern?



There were tons of these ferns growing along the Neuse River Greenway.  They look like some type of prehistoric ferns. I could imagine a triceratops munching away.
