Plantation chapel

This little chapel was moved from it's original place on a plantation near Gulf, NC.  It has been moved to the Mordecai historic park.

Built in 1847 by enslaved workers, it held religious services for the plantation owners and their enslaved workers.  The enslaved people were not allowed in the pews, but stood up in the balcony.

 

Angel army

This band of Angels surrounds the North Raleigh United Methodist Church.  I didn't count but it looks like hundreds.

Two churches, one block apart in downtown Raleigh share an intertwined history.  Edenton Street UMC began in 1811.  St. Paul AME began as the slave membership of Edenton, and became their own congregation in 1848. In 1865 they severed their ties and St. Paul became an AME church.

Happy birthday, two year old

The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was dedicated July 26, 2017.  

It's an impressive building, sitting on the grounds of the old Catholic Orphanage.

Happy Birthday to the new Cathedral.

Union Baptist Church

This tiny church, Union Baptist Church, sits on a busy street corner near downtown.  I can't find much information on it, but it looks like it has an interesting history.

Oaky grove Church

On my way out to Johnston Community College to help with their Robot Club, I took a wrong turn and ended up on a gravel road, Mial Plantation Rd.  To my delight I passed this charming little church.  More to my delight, I found a blog explaining the history of the church and the plantation it belonged to.  (See here)  Sometimes wrong turns are really right ones.

Stone chapel

This is the bell tower of a church at the corner of Main street and Holding in Wake Forest.  It appears to house two different missions.  One is a non-denominational community chapel (Here), the other is the Wake Forest Christian Church. (Here).  How would that work?  Sunday morning services, with one, and wedding venue with the other?

First Baptist

The First Baptist Church of Raleigh sits at the corner of Salisbury and Edenton streets downtown.  It was organized in 1812 and is one of the oldest churches in Raleigh.  The building was completed in 1859.

Old and New

Raleigh is a city of old and new.  Here in front is the American Institute of Architects building, with the Holy Trinity Church behind.

Plantation church

This little church was built on a plantation outside of Raleigh.  It was moved to the Mordecai Historical Park.  It was built by slaves and used by the entire population of the plantation.  Both the owners and their slaves worshiped together, however the slaves had to stand in the balcony while the owners had pews on the main level.  I like it's simplicity.
