Infinity rocks

We discovered this rock figure a few years ago.  It could have been a secret society that built it, or a colony of wiccan.  But it looks like they haven't been back.  It's losing it's definition.

I found this rock in a grouping of painted rocks. 

 I followed directions.

Well, a little bit silly actually.

 

Cairn

A mossy rock by an old farm shed.

 

Lichen

When the forest is mostly asleep for winter, I start noticing the smaller things. Lichen are really unusual, a symbiotic partnership of moss and algae.  This one lives on rocks.  It's a greenshield lichen, I think.   (see here)

 

Hidden Rocks

The signs on the trail called these "hidden rocks".  I don't think they're very hidden, they are pretty easy to find.

Rocks

In the quiet forest we came to the remnants of a stone wall.  These stones balanced on the rubble.

 

Bee kind

This little rock is sitting in a bee house.  Do the bees recognize their picture?

 

Cat and Mouse

In the same garden as yesterday, a cat and mouse make friends.

This rock is just one of a line of rocks blocking a road from vehicle traffic.  

What could it have commemorated?  Where did the plaque go?

 

Whale rocks

They call these whale rocks.  To me they look more like walruses.

 

Theme day: Rock and Roll

The theme this month is "Rock and Roll"...and I've got nothing.  

These rocks were stacked at the point of the peninsula reaching out into Falls Lake at the Forest Ridge Park.  It's a new, beautiful park in North Raleigh.

Hidden rocks and Resurrection Ferns

These are the " hidden rocks" of the hidden rocks trail at Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve.  There is one set of rocks they ask you not to climb on to preserve the Resurrection Ferns.  These ferns are pretty cool, they can lose up to 97% of their water during a drought, and then come back to life when they get wet.  More info here.

These rocks really do look like the backs of whales coming out of the stream.
