Watch out for the little guys

I know turtles, snakes and frogs are wildlife, but they just don't seem as exciting as a jumping deer on a sign.

I know that water from a landfill is directed to a place where it is treated.  I know that this is just a drainage ditch for stormwater.  But what's with the color?

Downtown from a distance

In the distance, from Green Hills park you can just see downtown 12 miles away.

 

Lonely picnic

At the top of the largest hill at Green Hills Park you can have a windy picnic overlooking the county waste disposal site.  Hmmm.

 

Green Hills Park

A hill is an unusual thing in Raleigh.  These "green hills" are manmade.  They cover a huge landfill.  The hills are dotted with these valves to control the methane release.

Landfills are more than just trash heaps, (see here).

 

Mountain bike fun

Green Hills Park has a mountain bike skills area.  It looks like a lot of fun.  And practicing here means they're not eroding the trails for everyone else.

Green Hills County Park

Raleigh is not known for it's hills, and it's definitely hard to find a place to see the big sky.  But here at Green Hills park you can see both.  Why?  Green Hills is the new name of Landfill Park.  Each of the hills is a completed landfill.  

Might be a good place to see the sunset.
