The spider at the center of this web must have been expecting a lot of company.  She made a big net to catch her prey.

A spider web shining in the sun.  It looked like someone hung a CD in the trees.

 

Theme Day: Sticky

This month's theme is sticky.  

I racked my brain trying to think of something that is sticky, and here it is.  A spider web is sticky to the fly anyway.

This spider held onto a big meal.  I'm not sure what he caught, but he wasn't letting go.

The orbweaver spiders are starting to show up.

Shelob

A spider like this must have given J.R.R. Tolkien inspiration for his monstrous spider, Shelob,  in The Hobbit.  And that of course gave inspiration to J.K. Rowlings for Aragog in Harry Potter.
  I didn't try to tempt her out.

Spiders in the grass

The dew on the grass collects on the grass spiders' webs in the morning.  The lawn is dotted with these little webs.  The web is like a little funnel with a flat sheet and a little tunnel for the spider to hide in (see here .)  If you look really closely you can see the little light brown spider in the web.

Spider season

Fall begins, not with leaf colors, but with spiders.  Their webs are everywhere now.  They build their webs at night. And surprise! In the morning I get a faceful of spiderweb when I go out to get the paper.

Another orbweaver

I couldn't find the spider this time, she must have been hiding.  But her web was glittering in the sun.  Makes me believe in Charlotte's Web.

Spiny orb weaver

These guys have been building webs every night across our walkway.  Every morning I either see the web and duck, or get a facefull of web.  The spiders themselves look really creepy.  They scuttle around like a crab, and they have these spines on their big backs.  They're spiny orbweaver spiders...see here.  Supposedly they're related to Charlotte of E.B.White fame.

(by the way, did you know that Charlotte's Web is a type of medicinal cannabis plant?  The things you learn from Wikipedia...)

Diamonds in the holly hedge

Recently we had a gentle misty day.  The spider webs on the holly hedge were loaded up with water drops.  It looked like the whole hedge was hung with diamonds.
