Theme day: Bridge

Bridges come in all sizes.  This one keeps your feet dry over a small trickle.

This one spans a creek.

 

Visitor

Looking out my kitchen window, I saw someone looking back at me.  A large Barred Owl.  He looked around for a while, flew to a nearby tree, and then moved off to better hunting grounds.  

 

Just passing by

Unfazed by people passing by on the greenway, this heron took a stroll.  

 

Kingfisher

A favorite perch for Mr. Kingfisher.

 

Glitter

Sunlight on the lake.

 

Walking on water?

The heron appeared to be walking on the water.  He was way out in the lake, but it was shallow enough for him to take a stroll.

 

Juxtaposition

If you stand in just the right place, a hoop of the Gyre surrounds a statue from Counterculture in the NC Museum of Art's sculpture park.

 

Apiary

In a secluded part of the NC museum of Art's sculpture park, we found an apiary.  It was buzzing with activity.

The bees were not unfriendly, but it's probably best that they aren't in a more well used part of the park.

 

Musical swings

We found a new exhibit at the NC Museum of Art's sculpture park.  These swings play musical tones, harp, piano,  guitar and vibraphone. The faster you move, the higher the tone. When you get all of them swinging, they harmonize in unique ways.

The benches rotate back and forth and play tones as well.  The harmonies are very soothing.

Early fall

Fall is slipping into the green.

 

Coneflower

The tall coneflower was really tall.

 

Nuthatch

This whitebreasted nuthatch was checking things out from the safety of a pine tree.

 

Panic grass

This native grass has a great name: Beaked Panic grass.  (don't believe me? see here.)

Goldfinch

From flowers to birds, yellow seems to be the color right now.

Tithonia

Finally the Tithonia is blooming.  The bees are happy about that.

 

Kingfisher

The kingfisher posed on a branch.

 

High above

I think it's a young red shouldered hawk.  It was high up on a dead tree watching smaller birds flitting around.

 

Hidden

We needed sharp eyes to find this heron.  

 

Laying in wait

The spider at the center of this web must have been expecting a lot of company.  She made a big net to catch her prey.

 

Praying

If aliens came to Earth, I think they'd look like a praying mantis.  Or maybe they already have.

Finally finished

Every week this mural is more and more complete.

Finally the artist is finished.  Her name is Sam Greene (see here)

She has put in all of the creatures that live in and around the lake.  It looks like a Greek vase it me.

Wet again

The swamp has water in it again.  It dried up during our month long drought.  But the water has come back with the rains.

 

Komorebi

Komorebi is the Japanese word for light filtering through leaves.  

 

Lunch time

She was just munching along, minding her own business, right beside a busy trail.

 

Pokeweed

It looks like grapes, but it's pokeweed.
