Bird?

This, I believe, is an American Bird Grasshopper.  Indeed when it flew past I thought it was a small bird. (see here)

 

Peek a boo

It's grasshopper season again!

 

Might as well jump

I put my camera on burst mode, and Jim scared the grasshopper.  He was so quick that I got only one good frame as he jumped away.

Here he is right before the jump.

 

In the grass

As we walked across the grass, it was alive with hoppers.  They were invisible until they fled from our feet.  Some were small, and some, like this beauty were several inches long.

This guy looks like Jimminy Cricket to me.  Even though he's a grasshopper not a cricket.

The grasshoppers were the size of small birds.  This one flew from the ground up into a tree.  A handsome fellow!

 

Blowin in the wind

Hurricane Zeta brought us a lot of wind, and some new friends.

This grasshopper swept in and crawled up the front window.

It was a welcome diversion on an inside day.

 

Big leap

He took a long leap.

He really was a handsome guy.

Did Katy?

A beautiful little insect visited our trash can.  He looked like a Katydid with no wings.

I think he's a Common Conehead Katydid nymph. (here)
I learned that you can tell a Katydid from a Grasshopper by the length of the antennae.  If they are wispy and long it's a Katydid.  
This guy definitely fits that description.
