Theme Day: Shadows

The theme this month is Shadows.
So, this is a reflection of a shadow off of a murky pond...

Dreamy

I didn't know how many different types of moths there were until I tried to identify this little guy.  I think he's a Dreamy Duskywing (see here).

Tulip Poplar

Tulip poplars have the prettiest flowers. But you never see them except fallen on the ground.  The trees are tall, and the flowers sit at the top.

Oven bird

"There us a singer everyone has heard,
Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,
Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again."

I studied Robert Frost's poem about the Oven Bird years ago in college.  But this was the first time I actually saw one.

Mayapple

The leaves of the mayapple look like umbrellas. And the flowers hide underneath.

Abandoned

Momma cardinal started her family in a vine arbor.  She must have decided that it wasn't the right place and left her nest and eggs.  We haven't seen her for a while.

Spring green

There's a special color of green you see only this time of year.  Crayola calls it "Spring Green"

Mare's tails

An old wives tale says that these wispy clouds predict upcoming rain.  It's more true than not in my experience.  Does that make me a member of the old wives club?

Wisteria

Wisteria are delicate, lovely and totally invasive.  But during their short blooming season you can forget all that and just enjoy them.

Eagle's nest

The bald eagle parents were still on lookout near the nest.  But this time there were two young eagles sitting just out of the nest.

Babies everywhere

The heron chicks were making quite a racket.  We saw at least 3 nests in one big pine tree.  These two chicks had the top bunk.

Feisty

This robin was making loud chirpy noises at another robin in the same bush.  Very territorial right now.

Where's the egg?

The neighbor has been hiding Easter eggs in her side garden for a week now.

There are new hiding places every day.

They're pretty easy to spot.

Not Snow

It looks like snow, but it's really a white azalea with little tiny white violets in the lawn.

garden table

This little garden table was completely surrounded by ferns.  Were they invited to lunch?

Through the gazebo

At the edge of the Joslin garden you can look out to the neighbors' gardens as well.  They must have been inspired by the Joslins' work.

Tree house

Turning a corner in Joslin garden we came upon a tree house.

The door hinges were formidable but there was no one inside.

Joslin garden

Joslin garden is a hard to find Raleigh park.
It was the home of William and Mary Coker Joslin for over 60 years.  In that time they created an amazing garden on their 4.5 acre property.  It was given to the city of Raleigh in 2021.

Their home is still in the park, and can be rented for weddings and parties.
