Theme day: Blue

A group of bluebirds were flying around a dead tree, in and out of holes.  

They looked like young birds still developing their color.

 

Grumpy

The egret didn't look to happy with the scum on the lake.

 

Sky reversed

The sky reflected in the lake.

 

Dragonfly

Dragonflies are busy catching smaller bugs.

 

Poebe

A pair of Phoebes zoomed around catching bugs.  This one sat for a portrait.

 

Fungus

'Tis the season for all kinds of fungi to pop up.

 

Beautyberry

In late summer/early fall the Beautyberry glows.  It's nearly impossible to capture the vibrant color of the berries.  Imagine this picture but more intense.

 

Fall

The fall leaves are sneaking into the green.

 

Yellow flower season

The fall is the time when all the yellow flowers come out.  There are so many daisylike yellow flowers I can't tell you what this one is.

 

Variegated Fritillary

We see this little guy late in the season.  It's a Variegated Fritillary, the last butterfly of the season.  (Or so this site says: here)

 

Empty bench

I've never seen someone actually sitting on this bench, but why not?  The view is spectacular.

 

Mushroom

Our wet weather has brought up the mushrooms.  Here's a little colony of ringless honey mushrooms.   Perfect hiding place for an elf or fairy.

 

 

After the rain

I haven't posted any pictures for a little while.  Every time I was ready to go out, it would rain.  We've had days and days of heavy rain these last weeks.  But here's the opening in the clouds!

 

Vine

This lovely vine is either Old Man's Beard, a native vine (see here) , or Sweet Autumn Clematis, a non native (see here).  Either way they are invasive, but beautiful in the late summer.

 

Pier

A view of the fishing pier from across the lake.

 

Sun in the fog

A foggy sunny day.

 

Muddy trail

Torrential rain the night before made for a mucky walk.

 

Mossy

Does moss really grow on the north side of trees?

Yes, but also on the east, south and west side too.

 

Diamonds?

Striding through the water, the egret looked like it had diamond shoes.

 

Heron

Yet another Heron posing for the camera.

 

Boardwalk

Shelly lake boardwalk from across the lake.

 

Half moon

A daytime moon.

 

Fetch

An early morning game of fetch.  The lake was steaming in the sun. 

 

White bird

Instead of the usual Great Blue Heron, a Great Egret was wading in the water.
